Introduction
At Sustainability Pathways Africa, we believe that environmental action begins with education, awareness, and hands-on experience, especially among young people. Since founding the initiative, I’ve had the privilege of working with schools across Kenya to plant trees, and spark a culture of climate leadership among students.
These experiences have been eye-opening, both for the students and for me. I’ve seen how a single tree can start a conversation, and how one workshop can inspire a whole class to think differently about the environment.
Tree Planting That Builds Ownership
In every school we visit, tree planting is always the highlight. We work with students and teachers to plant indigenous trees chosen not just for their beauty, but for their ability to support local ecosystems.
Before we plant, we host a short session on why trees matter, explaining how they clean our air, conserve water, prevent soil erosion, and provide food and shade. Every student plants their own tree and gives it a name, creating a sense of connection and responsibility.
“This is not just a tree, it’s our legacy,” one student told me.
Creating Culture, Not Just Campaigns
Sustainability isn’t just about events, it’s about culture. And culture is built one small habit at a time.
In every school we visit, we encourage students to see trees as something they’re responsible for, not just something planted during a ceremony.
We’ve seen students checking on the trees they helped plant weeks later, watering them, clearing the weeds, and even reminding others not to step on them.
The biggest lesson? When you plant a tree, you’re also planting values like care, patience, and responsibility. And that’s how we build a lasting culture of sustainability, not just one-time campaigns..
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a big budget or years of experience to make a difference. What you need is commitment, creativity, and a willingness to start wherever you are.
At Sustainability Pathways Africa, we’re proud to be supporting the next generation of climate-conscious citizens across the continent. And we’re just getting started.
